Discovering hidden melodic Treasures of Davao: Vinyl Record Shopping in the Philippines

I just came back from a trip to the Philippines and Davao, and I wanted to write something for music enthusiasts and vinyl junkies!  If you're in Davao, Philippines, and find yourself craving some sweet tunes on vintage vinyl, then you could be in for a treat. When you search on Google, you'll come across a couple of well-known spots, such as Taurus Records and Vintage Collectibles Music Shop, as well as Agila Audio. These places aren't just your typical stores; they're homes of passionate individuals who breathe music. But wait, there's more! Beyond the digital realm, hidden away from official listings, lies a secret gem that's worth seeking out. It's the quaint shop owned by a remarkable 70+ year old lady named Eva. Nestled at 16 Libra Street in Talomo, Davao, her store might not show up in your online search, but, it's a curious little haven for vinyl enthusiasts and the odd bargain. Eva's collection boasts a wide range of old records, primarily ...

Marnie Weber - Songs Hurt Me (FULL ALBUM)

Songs Hurt Me – Marnie Weber A whimper in the dark. A lullaby sung to a wound. Marnie Weber’s voice curls like smoke from a burned photograph, her melody a séance for lost innocence.  This is the sound of nostalgia turned to thorns—where every note aches, and every lyric is a bruise you can’t stop pressing. #MarnieWeber #AvantFolk #HauntedPop #SongsThatCut #DarkFairyTale #NostalgiaHurts #ExperimentalMusic

Joe Bataan's "Gypsy Woman" is a classic Latin boogaloo song that has stood the test of time

Originally released in 1967, the song has been covered by many artists and continues to be a favourite of mine Whilst many versions of this song exist this demo version of "Gypsy Woman" is for me more striking than the final and original version by The Impressions or Joe himself! This demo version has more soul that melts off it in such ease, and a thick punch, that really captures the raw energy of Bataan's music. While the final version of "Gypsy Woman" was sped up and given a more rapid Latin boogaloo or cha cha cha sound, the demo version here has a more relaxed groove that allows Bataan's vocals to shine. The Filipino-African American musician's soulful voice is front and centre, accompanied by a driving rhythm section and a catchy horn riff. I am so glad this demo version exists. It's a reminder of the power of raw, unfiltered music, early versions and how import it is to capture RAW magic and energy in a song. If you're a fan of Latin ...

Sylvester - Epilogue we will make you feel - more than mighty real!

Are you ready to get uplifted and inspired? Then have another look again at the incredible musician Sylvester and his iconic song "You make me feel." This song has been pounding on dance floors around the world for decades, and rightly so - it's an absolute banger! But there's another version of this song that seems to have slipped under the radar. It's a slower version with an uplifting gospel vibe that will fill your heart with joy. Unfortunately, I never had the chance to see Sylvester perform live, but those who did were in for a treat with this version. For those who missed out on experiencing this live, don't worry - you can still witness a super version on his fourth LP Step II. This album, released in 1978, showcases Sylvester's amazing vocal range and his ability to create music that uplifts the soul. And the best part? You can easily find this album on vinyl in the UK, and it's most likely sitting in a bargain bin waiting for you to snatch i...

Dante’s Inferno – The Blues Magoos From The Mercury Singles (1966–1968)

A scorching, surreal descent through fuzz and fractured rhythm— Dante’s Inferno isn’t just a track, it’s a glitch in time. It calls to mind the raw terrain of our own V/Vm Flat Slab piece for the Manchester 0161 compilation: lo-fi, low-stakes, anti-vanity—a time when sound wasn’t a brand but a rupture. This is real experimentation. A time capsule from when no one was checking stats, when sonic detours were taken not to impress but to express. There’s something unhinged yet sincere about it—garage psych spiraling into cosmic paranoia, a proto-industrial undertow masked as blues. Refreshing comes to mind. Because it is.

William Onyeabor's song "Better Change Your Mind" is a powerful reminder that those in power, whether they be men, nations, rules, or presidents, do not own the world.

This song is a humbling reminder that we must not become too self-assured or arrogant in our beliefs, as we are all subject to the same ultimate authority. The lyrics of the song call out specific countries such as America, Russia, China, Cuba, Canada, and Britain, reminding us that even the most powerful nations on earth do not own the world. This message is especially relevant today, as tensions rise between superpowers such as the United States and Russia over conflicts like the war in Ukraine. One line in particular stands out in the lyrics: "You white man, you ever think this world is yours, eh? And you black man, hey yeah, you ever think this world is yours?" This line is a poignant reminder that race and ethnicity do not determine ownership of the world. We are all equal under God, at least according to William Onyeabor's song. Better Change Your Mind - reminds us that no one group has a greater claim to the world than another. The concept of "Good Orderly Dir...

Why has Alice had so much influence on songs and what are my top 10 songs with the title Alice?

First, it's worth noting that the name Alice has been a popular subject for musicians and songwriters. From rock to electronic, there are numerous songs with the title name of Alice. Some of the most notable ones are listed below, along with interesting facts about each one. There are many ways we can look at this, if it goes for my own personal taste then I wouldn't be keen on mentioning some of these, for example Alice" by Avril Lavigne - really does not do it for me, but it could well be included here. Anyway here are some songs you may or not know which could take us further into the rabbit hole. "Alice" by Smashing Pumpkins - This song is a B-side from the band's 1993 album, "Siamese Dream." It was later included in their compilation album, "Pisces Iscariot." "Alice" by Tom Waits - This eerie and haunting song appears on Waits' 2002 album, "Alice," which was inspired by Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonder...

NG 'Ugomeku Ego' 7" 1981 - 3 Tracks - Rare Japanese Experimental/No Wave...

I don't own this one — back in 1981 I wasn’t yet buying Japanese experimental music, and truth be told, I only discovered this wild little gem quite recently. But what a discovery. Ugomeku Ego is a stunning piece of experimentation, especially considering it was released in 1981. The sound is pretty far out: fractured, raw, but somehow coherent in its own strange logic. It's one of those records that makes you wonder just how many of these brilliant, obscure pockets of creativity were happening under the radar at the time. The 7" features three tracks: A1: Ugomeku Ego A2: LS Disco B: Ambivalence Each track takes its own twist, blending elements of rock, experimental noise, and an almost disorienting sense of rhythm and structure — quite marvelous, nonetheless. At the moment, there's one copy up on Discogs for £111. Definitely not cheap, but for collectors of early Japanese experimental vinyl, this is one of those grails.

JUNO - SOUL THUNDER (DRILLERS MIX) 1990.

A good old friend of mine is currently selling his old house, techno and dance records. This one came up which I had forgotten about.

Willie Hutch's "Midnight Dancer" (1979) – A Soulful Odyssey Under Disco Lights

In the late '70s, as the disco fever swept across dance floors worldwide, soulful crooner Willie Hutch decided to throw his hat into the glittering ring with "Midnight Dancer" – an album that seamlessly marries his signature smooth soul vocals with the pulsating beats of disco. Released in 1979, this album marked a departure from Hutch's Motown roots, and it's safe to say that he made the transition with impeccable style. Soulful Charisma: "Midnight Dancer" opens with the titular track, and from the first note, it's clear that Hutch's soulful charisma is front and center. His rich, emotive voice, reminiscent of Marvin Gaye, finds new life in the world of disco, adding depth and authenticity to the genre. Groove-Inducing Disco Jams: Throughout the album, Hutch effortlessly navigates the disco landscape with tracks like "Party Down" and "Disco Thang." These songs are pure, unadulterated dancefloor bliss. The basslines are funky,...
