Why has Alice had so much influence on songs and what are my top 10 songs with the title Alice?

First, it's worth noting that the name Alice has been a popular subject for musicians and songwriters. From rock to electronic, there are numerous songs with the title name of Alice. Some of the most notable ones are listed below, along with interesting facts about each one.


There are many ways we can look at this, if it goes for my own personal taste then I wouldn't be keen on mentioning some of these, for example Alice" by Avril Lavigne - really does not do it for me, but it could well be included here. Anyway here are some songs you may or not know which could take us further into the rabbit hole.

  1. "Alice" by Smashing Pumpkins - This song is a B-side from the band's 1993 album, "Siamese Dream." It was later included in their compilation album, "Pisces Iscariot."

  2. "Alice" by Tom Waits - This eerie and haunting song appears on Waits' 2002 album, "Alice," which was inspired by Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland" books.

  3. "Alice Practice" by Crystal Castles - This Canadian electronic duo released "Alice Practice" in 2006 as their debut single. The song is named after a microphone testing session where vocalist Alice Glass improvised the lyrics.


  4. "White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane - While not explicitly titled "Alice," "White Rabbit" references Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland" books and is often associated with them. The song became a hit in 1967 and is now considered a classic of the psychedelic rock genre.

  5. "Alice" by Moby - Released in 2018, this instrumental track is a tribute to Alice Coltrane who I love, so fair play to Mr Moby, as who would not want to nod a hat and salute the jazz pianist and widow of John Coltrane?

"Living Next Door to Alice" - by Gompie - This song was has a great chorus that goes "Alice - Who the Fuck is Alice?" - The song "Living Next Door to Alice" was listened to on a regular basis in café Gompie in NijmegenIt tells a story of a neighbour who lived next door for 24 years. Alice is leaving and the band all want a second glance at Alice, as she is leaving. Have a listen, and sing along with these Dutch masters!

  7. "Alice in Chains" by Alice in Chains - The band's name itself is a reference to Lewis Carroll's books, and this song, which appears on their 1995 self-titled album, continues the theme. Not sure where the chains came from!

  8. "Alice" by Pogo - This Australian electronic musician creates remixes of movies and TV shows, this one was made in 2013. it's a chop up mix of samples, nothing nearly as abstract as Stock Hausen and Walkman but, a sample is used in this piece and a sample taken from the 1951 Disney film "Alice in Wonderland."

  9. "Alice" by Brokli - The British new spiritual funk producer has also made a song in 2023 with more references to Alice and a lyric which mentions taking me down the rabbit hole

  10. "Alice" by Lady Gaga - Agin the track make reference to Alice in a fictional setting which referenced Lewis Carroll's 1865 children's novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland,  Lady Gaga uses Alice as a metaphor for struggeling to find personal peace and happines in life. ]

In summary, songs with the title "Alice" can come from a variety of genres and eras. Some are explicit references to Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland" books, while others simply share the name. Regardless of their origins, these songs offer a unique perspective on a name that has captured the imagination of musicians and listeners alike.
