Discovering hidden melodic Treasures of Davao: Vinyl Record Shopping in the Philippines

I just came back from a trip to the Philippines and Davao, and I wanted to write something for music enthusiasts and vinyl junkies!

If you're in Davao, Philippines, and find yourself craving some sweet tunes on vintage vinyl, then you could be in for a treat. When you search on Google, you'll come across a couple of well-known spots, such as Taurus Records and Vintage Collectibles Music Shop, as well as Agila Audio. These places aren't just your typical stores; they're homes of passionate individuals who breathe music.

But wait, there's more! Beyond the digital realm, hidden away from official listings, lies a secret gem that's worth seeking out. It's the quaint shop owned by a remarkable 70+ year old lady named Eva. Nestled at 16 Libra Street in Talomo, Davao, her store might not show up in your online search, but, it's a curious little haven for vinyl enthusiasts and the odd bargain.

Eva's collection boasts a wide range of old records, primarily sourced from the UK. Whether you're into folk, pop, rock, electronica, punk, or heavy metal, you have a chance to find something on beat. Prices at Eva's store start at around 300-400 PHP per record, so approx. $4 USD, going up to 2000 PHP for those rare finds. And here's a little secret: if you're purchasing multiple records, don't be shy to ask Eva for a discount, I got a lucky 3 x record vinyl dip after my trip, which bagged me some Kate Bush, Ry Cooder and a double Chick Corea LP, so not too shabby when they came free of charge!

Now, let's talk about the overall experience. Agila Audio and Eva's shop offer distinct vibes, making it worthwhile to visit both. At Agila Audio, you'll meet Jason, the owner, who not only sells vinyl but also deals in refurbished Japanese amplifiers and turntables.

What's more, he has a professional vinyl cleaning machine, ensuring that the records you purchase are in top-notch condition.

However, it's essential to note that many of the records in these stores are second-hand, so give them a thorough inspection before purchasing. A scratchy surprise is the last thing you want to find after leaving the shop. Remember, each record tells a story, so make sure it plays the melody you're seeking and does not have a nasty surprise etched in.

All the stores I found have turntables on standby, ready to serenade your ears. So, take your time, browse through the collections, and let the music transport you to another time and place.

My particular experience was on a weekday, and I can say, I got plenty of personalized attention. All of the shop owners took the time to engage in one-on-one conversations, and they were eager to share their knowledge and recommendations.

Whether you're a seasoned collector or a novice starting your vinyl journey, they'll happily guide you through the musical maze, helping you uncover hidden treasures.

In the relaxed atmosphere of these stores, it felt more like visiting a friend's living room than a typical retail experience. There's a genuine passion for music and curiosity that permeates the air, which made the whole process more enjoyable and infectious. If you try these stores as I did you might find yourself engaged in heartfelt conversations about artists, genres, culture, rock, pop, soul, house, and jazz, or quite simply just the magic of vinyl itself!

So, don't hesitate to strike up a conversation when you visit, ask for recommendations, or simply share your own musical tales. These shop owners are as excited about the music as you are, and they'll go above and beyond to ensure you have an unforgettable and personal experience.

In conclusion, dear music lovers, Davao seems to be creating very personalised places for vinyl enthusiasts like us.

When you visit Taurus Records, Agila Audio, and Eva's secret sanctuary, you'll encounter a personal touch that only shop owners with a deep passion for music can provide.

So, put on your favourite tunes, follow the rhythm, and embark on a vinyl record shopping adventure that'll leave your soul singing, and hopefully you will pick up some additional tunes too!
