Albert Verrecchia - In The Space (Italy, 1977)

Verrecchia, a maestro of the era's experimental soundscapes, weaves a tapestry of synths and rhythms that feels both ahead of its time and deeply rooted in the psychedelic ethos of the 70s. The song begins with a mesmerising synth melody that immediately transports you to a different dimension, setting the tone for an auditory experience that is as much about exploration as it is about music. The layers of sound build upon each other, creating a complex yet harmonious arrangement that captivates from start to finish. What makes "In The Space" particularly impactful is its ability to evoke emotion and imagery with its instrumental prowess. It's a song that doesn't just play; it resonates, leaving a lasting impression that's hard to shake. Whether you're a fan of 70s music, an aficionado of exper

Priscilla Ermel - Martim Pescador

Priscilla Ermel's "Martim Pescador" is a captivating musical odyssey that beckons listeners to explore uncharted soundscapes, and a particular track that I love on sunny days. Released in 1986, this album stands as a testament to Ermel's visionary approach to music, blending diverse cultural influences into a spellbinding sonic tapestry. From the very first notes of "Martim Pescador," you are transported to the lush, untamed landscapes of Brazil. Ermel's mastery of various instruments, including the guitar, flute, and synthesizers, is on full display. The title track, "Martim Pescador," captures the essence of the Amazon rainforest with its rich, organic instrumentation, evoking the calls of exotic birds and the gentle rustling of leaves in the breeze. It's a musical meditation on nature's symphony. Ermel's compositions are a harmonious fusion of traditional Brazilian rhythms and modern electronic elements. Her ethereal vocals, ofte

Zorba The Greek - Sirtaki / A great way to end the night.

Every record collection has that one timeless piece, that final track which has the power to seal the night with an indelible memory. For us, one of those tracks could at times be "Sirtaki" from 'Zorba The Greek.' This song strikes everyone between their eye and summons celebration transcending language. I recall the nights at El Perro Club in Malasaña, Madrid – those were where our DJ booth would transmit this song and "Sirtaki" would tell everyone that the end was both a closing and a new beginning. The moment those first unmistakable notes hit the speakers, a collective energy would surge through the crowd. This was beyond the cue for last orders; it was the call to all ordering everyone to join in a circle, hold hand and engaged in a shared experience. We were no longer just a mass of party-goers; we became a family. Arms would find shoulders, steps would fall in line, and the room would pulse with a rhythm that even those with two left feet couldn't

Advanced Art - From Nothing To Nothing

From Nothing to Nothing" by Advanced Art is a track that encapsulates the essence of the band’s distinctive electro-industrial sound. Dark, pulsing, and unapologetically edgy, it’s a piece that plunges you into the depths of synth-driven darkness from the very first note. The song kicks off with a compelling electronic beat that sets a brooding and intense atmosphere. The layers of synths are expertly crafted, building a complex tapestry of sounds that feel both retro and futuristic. Advanced Art’s vocal delivery is as sharp as ever, cutting through the dense electronic fog with clarity and purpose. Lyrically, "From Nothing to Nothing" explores themes of existential angst and the cyclical nature of existence, making it a thought-provoking listen. The chorus is catchy yet haunting, echoing the nihilistic feel of the lyrics and leaving a lasting impression. Overall, "From Nothing to Nothing" is a powerful offering from Advanced Art, showcasing their ability to me

Sperm – Shh! Heinäsirkat (1970)

Heinäsirkat" by the Finnish band Sperm, also known as "Shh! Heinäsirkat," it is without question most groundbreaking - well done lads. Released in 1970, the album featured avant-garde experimental music that was ahead of its time, with a unique blend of psychedelic rock, jazz, and electronic music. It is inspired to know that this album was recorded entirely in a home studio, without any professional recording equipment just like we used to do at V/Vm. Apparently the band members used whatever tools they had at their disposal, including a reel-to-reel tape recorder, a broken amplifier, and even a toy xylophone. I hear so many things here, even some of my own work with Speedranch. Despite the limited resources, we all had, Sperm managed to create a truly innovative and mind-bending album, with tracks that ranged from sparse and haunting to chaotic and frenzied. The album has been cited as an influence on numerous experimental musicians in Finland and beyond, and it remain

It is so sad to hear that today Pita or Peter Rehberg has suddenly died of a heart attack

No one in electronica can deny how Peter was, I remember meeting him and clearly realising how determined he was. The young face here in this photo is quite as I remember him from back then.  From about 1997 we did get quite several chances to meet especially in the early days, the last time we met was at an electronic music festival in Andalucía around 2004. Before this time we James Leyland Kirby, Speedranch, Matt Wand and many of my close allies couldn't help but notice Mego from it’s early days pre 2006, for me it was actually Farmers Manual Explorers_we in about 2007, that drew me in, and opened me into Mego. We were all pushing out audio at that time, 1997-2000, all of us working our envelopes and audio, making and branding on to sound.  I will never forget doing the sound for Pita at an event in Hassalt, Belguim, I believe it was one of those FAT CAT records events. I can never forget the time or the moment that I was doing the sound in real time for Pita. It was a time wh

Clara Rockmore | The Swan

This song just seems to be engraved all over my history, and inserted into so much. Does anyone else feel like this? It might be something to do with having this song played to me whilst being in an outdoor spa in Austria after a wonderful subversive experience at Elevate Festival.  Clara Rockmore's rendition of 'The Swan' is a just such a classic theremin tune. I mean it feels like an old friend. Originally composed by Camille Saint-Saëns as part of 'The Carnival of the Animals,' this piece is known for its lyrical and serene melody. Rockmore's performance captures the delicate and ethereal nature of the music, with the theremin’s unique, otherworldly sound adding an enchanting quality. Her precise control can be seen in this video showing just exactly how much of an intrecate instrument the theramin is. The pitch use and dynamics brings a hauntingly beautiful expressiveness to the piece, making the theremin sing like a human voice. 'The Swan' in Rockm

This album reminds me of  what it would be like to have fallen over board in the Mediterranean sea, and somehow after being been washed realising your back in 1992 on a  Balearic Islands  with all of your best friends, and an ear full of water. Hazy, a little fuzzy, but great.

Epoch 90 - V.L.S.I. Heaven (Zone Mix)

Epoch 90's "V.L.S.I. Heaven" is a seminal rave song that has had a lasting impact on the electronic music scene. This track was not only played by 808 State but also by many radio stations especially us myself as DJ Jiffy on the IBC - illegal broadcast company Radio station out of north Manchester, but other Dj's of the time like Stew Allan, Conspiracy Club Manchester, and more would play this track. It's as close as a rave song gets to encapsulating the purity of the rave experience glowing and vibrant eternal, with its soaring synths, driving beats, and otherworldly atmosphere. As a DJ of the time, when this record was born, I personally witnessed the power of the track on the dancefloor.
