What do machines sing of? And when will they make an Elvis DSP Plugin?

What do machines sing of? Here is a project by artist Martin Backes that features a sinewave running on a machine. The machine appears to be singing, and performing 90s hits from the likes of Whitney Houston and Celine Dion. This project is a very long way from my own personal future vison of having powerful DSP plugins that just give you a preset for say Elvis, or Frank Sinatra. V/Vm dreamed of adding a preferred vocalist like an instrument to any song. I am sure I am not alone, having the power to add any top 100 artist and  apply, just as you can select a violin instrument, is really something to open and experiement with. Here the simplicity is charming and quaint as our screen vocals and mimics the ballads. Click below to watch the video on Vimeo where I first found it.

My Grandfather George passed away today , death has shown itself to me again. Loss, life, time, maintain. For those who leave us, they are well, it´s those here that are left to remember. I cannot say I knew my Grandfather well, but the last 3 years we have had some time to enjoy. I was lucky to say fair well to him and for him to shake my hand and say goodbye. He thought I was getting on a plane, I thought I was coming back, I told him I would see him soon, and he said ´´see you soon, that will be right´´, in a sarcastic tone. He was right, I wont see him for quite some time.

[1990] LFO - Brainstorm - Pt 2 [3/3]

Without any doubt, we are living in incredibly turbulent and surprising times. Around every corner lurks something else. Today I have had Birthdays, Record Captures (fish), Weddings and Death. It´s impossible to sort them and prioritize. The death of LFO´s main man Mark Bell is indeed a blow, I remember meeting Mark back stage at here in Madrid, it was a big show, Bjork was also hovering around, since it was her gig, Mark introduced me too Bjork with such a big up, it was hard to take in. I remember his gusto, energy and enthusiasm towards previous works I´d been involved with at V/Vm. He told me that day, he had just been listening to one of our tracks, and encouraged Bjork to do the same, saying something like, ´´this is the guy that made that track I was just playing´´, Bjork was not impressed. Mark was a great man, fantastic energy, the track above he never made, but I always thought he had. I knew this was our LFO guys that had brought us the LFO Leeds Warehouse track. It´s har

Nuit Blanche - Arev Manoukian

We Rise · Rhiannon Giddens

I love Rhiannon Giddens I have to admit. Her work with Carolina Chocolate Drops was just so inspired.

Bela Tarr, Damnation - song Kész az egész / Over and done

My man James Leyland Kirby just sent me a link to this Hungarian piece from Bela Tarr. When you watch, you have to think about human sensibility, dignity, people real people, it looks like someone is on the edge, thinking about a horrible split and a situation gone. James, has for long time, been able to position himself into uneasy spots musically. Rest in unrest, the audio here compliments the broke, gone theme, its defiantly finished, as the words go; ´´It's all over, Over, And there won't be another, it won't be good, ever again, Never more, Maybe never more, It's like a nightmare. Take it or leave it, this is what you're stuck with, what can you do? What would you do, have you been here before? It won't be good Ever again Maybe never more He's got my soul Things are going his way Without him This world is barren With him Life is full and happy Silly Never again Maybe never more It's over All over There's no end No end n

Kwabs - Wrong or Right (Official Video)

I am loving the choreography in this Kwabs here. The dance moves from this crew, compliment so well, the director has captured and blended a great international London centric cocktail, very much of now. Kwabs, have been on my playlist these last few months, check it!

Frank De Wulf - The heat of the moment (1990)

Hang on to it, just 20 views on Youtube today this song has, almost 20 years have passed and at least 12 since I last heard this, a certain Mr Acid reminding me of this today. I was hoping to squeeze, and do as Frank does here in San Sebastian this weekend, but the camino has taken me physically to another place. Hanging on to it. !!

Frankie Knuckles - Tears

Real sad to wake up this morning and hear about Frankie Knuckles, in honor of the great man, for his inspiration and moving House Music, I played and listened in absolute silence to Your Love and Tears.  I have met many legends in my time, and spoken with inspirational creators, I never met Frankie, but his music met me! R.I.P. ....and later this day, I was checking into Frankie, and spent all or as much of the day listening to his mix´s and music. I was amazed to find no lyrics for his sexual classic - Baby Wants to Ride, so here in rememberance of Frankie Knuckles, you have the lyrics.....It´s the least I can do, on this day, for someone who had such an impact on me as a youngster. . Frankie Knuckles, - Baby Wants to Ride, (Original Club Mix) 8.37 Now I lay me down to sleep I pray the lord my soul to keep and if I die before I wake I pray the lord my soul to take. Jamie it´s time to tell my people the truth. It´s time to tell them the revelation of my second coming hav

Andrew Read & Anthony Child - Guitar Treatment Pt. 7

Feels like a long time ago, listening to this, and thinking about the time when this record was sent to me, as I was sharing vinyl and had my music on one side. Always a strong release, a timeless cracker, time keeps on moving, as we always knew, my time don't stick, but the music we made and shared back then, was sometimes sticky!

Aardvarck - 1990

Sounding incredibly retro, lush pads not distant (in melody) to Octave One - I believe. Loving the full sythn and percussoin, reminding me of how good they were back in 1990, almost an R&S classic.  Great work.

James Leyland Kirby on Apollo Records - Soon

Nice to start the new year in a new space. My sparing partner James Leyland Kirby is doing just so, by spreading audio light, onto the Apollo Record Label, the quieter sister label of R & S Records. It´s impossible to say, how important both these labels were to us at V/Vm Test Records back in the day, the influence of those advanced Belgium classics, and our man Acid Alan drove, drives and has driven, deep into our Mancunian souls. Wonderful news, at the start of the year, completing a voyage that started a long time ago. Keep an eye out for the release and follow the link for more!! http://www.junodownload.com/plus/2014/01/07/leyland-kirby-surfaces-on-apollo/
Summer is here, hot in the City. Eating very well, thinking about dance in Montreal and SFrisco. Last year of the 30, birthday most days. Loving it!!!

Friends of Dean Martinez - Wichita Lineman - Summer is here!!!

Amazingly we have snow on the Sierra, it really has been quite the longest Spring I recall, a glorious Spring lacking in work, but full of flower. So much dance too, and now it really is Summer Time, and it feels like my time to ride off into the Sunset as ever. First Alcazaba for 4 weeks, its just the highest mountain village in Spain, very little signal that side, but plenty of entertainment. Later Vitoria-Gasteiz, for a feed and monster descanso, 3 weeks of Fishing, camping frolic. Afterwards, a short skip and hop to England, old London Town, Manchester, topped off with a postre of Canada and San Francisco, ARRRRGh, dancing and Swinging for sure. More than a mouthful that lot, so to settle it all down, I am getting on well with this super chill version of Wichita Lineman. The Friends of Dean Martinez, are a friend of mine...See you on top of a mountain or just Swinging under the Golden Gate Bridge, on the Summer Breeze, yes please. ARRRRGH!!! .
When I discovered Faultline, I jumped on, and was first to release, the best track on our album Welcome To Execrate. That was back in 1998, amazingly, that was 15 years, ago. At that time, I brought this recording to ears of many. Way, before it was released on the Leaf label. At that time, it felt like a whole world of possibilities, this music was standing, so strong, anything then could occur. Since that time, I have lived, many, music, and moments, but this does now, sound, still. Clearly encrusted, and frozen, locked into it´s place. On the other side the possibilities, all that were, have shifted, like grains of sand, they have drifted into a vent, somehow lost. Chances, that got closer, then went! Nice to remind myself of that sometimes, Music is wonderful for re-jogging memory.

The Joy of Dirt Bacharach

Made a discovery today, check the link. I have been enjoying Dirt all day. So, so reminds me of the past and some of our earlier V/Vm works. Lots of mashable fun here from Dirt!! Enjoy. http://grooveshark.com/#!/album/Dirt+Bacharach/860731

Birthdays, ontop of birthdays, rolling from one thing to another

Just sums my night up, curry with Becks, Leilah, Cristina, Dil and Claire. Followed by Swing at Traveling, and a chance collision with Cesar & Antonio at said bar. After swinging that side, we landed in the hands of the greatest captain, Tony! A classic night, alright in Madrid.x

Running!!!!

My old Mate Keith Fullerton Whitman is getting riding on the 9, and thinking about the next zero!!!

While he thinks about the 9 to 0, again for the fourth time, music follows, funny what numbers can do to us!!!! check the link as Keith is a good chap, following more details about the why, when and what! https://soundcloud.com/kfw/sets/greatest-hits "Greatest Hits" (2003-) … on the eve of my 30th birthday, I began rendering "automatic" "enhancements" of only the most salient points of the pop music of my youth ; a line, bar, or fragment of a particular song (after being heard out in "the wild" in the present ; akin to running into an old friend on the street) was chosen based on how much my nostalgic recollection of it differed from its contemporary reality. Each was played back at exactly half-speed, then run through a series of time- and gain-based processes that slowly & meticulously chewed through the audio, revealing hidden layers of content, context, and temporal / spectral production details … shining a flashlight

OVE-NAX in Madrid

A great friend of mind Germaine just reminded me of my old mate OVE-NAX. So, I thought I would post this. Quite a few years back I had the pleasure of howling and showing a champion fisherman, showman, DJ and producer Mr Ove-Nax, the mythical grabber dance. At the time rumors we correct that, I knew the dance well, and that I could teach it. Ove-Nax, knowing something about my colorful background, was straight onto me and asking me to show him and demonstrate ´´Grabber´´, movements.... Within a short time, he had adapted the correct footwork, he was light and fast with good posture. Inspired, I showed him more. After a short time, he was rocking the grabber dance and adding his own gestures, role play and improvisations, much to the amusement of the onlookers at the nightclub. It has been sometime since I have spoken with him and indeed danced grabber, but with very little language, as my Japanese was and is rusty, we managed to engage in a wonderful cultural exchange of  the d

Currently Inspired by The Ethnosphere - New Jansky Noise works to follow

The ethnosphere is the sum total of the world's cultures. It incorporates, among other cultural facets, ". . . all thoughts, dreams, ideas, beliefs, myths, intuitions, and inspirations brought into being by the human imagination since the dawn of consciousness". Ethnosphere refers to both the accumulation of living cultures and the ancient lineages from which they evolved. This concept, is something else, it has helped me to hang new works onto it. Watch this space!!

The Find of the day, love the barking in this, so so good!

Earl Bostic - Harlem Nocturne

Late night in the end, found myself back at the best bar in Madrid. You got to love Tony

Been working on advanced and creepy musics like this!

The Blackout and decapitation of The Internet.

When you listen to this, you must accept that it is loaded and charged full of energy. What a fu*king message. As Lil Louis said, ´´if we dont change quick, it´s coming´´....Well, today it has never been truer. Are you ready for the decapitating of the internet, and the Blackout? Will someone flick the switch? I believe they can and much more.

FINI TRIBE - DE TESTIMONY

I was just reminded of this track by a certain Mr Acid Alan. It has not been mentioned in some time. Great show from the Fini Tribe, poor that this has had so few views on Youtube. A lost track, which had so much force, now shadowed by drivel and lesser releases without the same attitude. We know who you are at Fini and we have faith in your energy of 1987. ARRRRGH

Pita - Get Out

I remember when I did the sound for Pita R at an event arranged by Fat Cat London. It was incredible what came through the system thanks both to this and the EQ touch I gave. Needless to say, Pita took his drink and attitude off into the night, rarely to be seen again with my eyes, well that is, until we crossed paths when we both played at Benicasim Festival in 2004. Today, really is a day of thinking back and going forward.

Django Reinhardt - Aquarela do Brasil

Brazil - Geoff Muldaur

I have just deleted 9,000 emails from my sent box. They have gone! Never to come back. Tomorrow is another day. All in the past. The last 24hr. my head has been full of this. So, no I play Brazil, Brasil,  and think about dancing under the Golden Bridge. CA. Honestly! And, yesterday, I sent the saddest song, laced in all this, when the release comes out on the 10 Label  Japan, you too can hear. In the meantime, roll on.
